Rex Barney Autograph

Rex Barney was a former American baseball player and broadcaster who was most popularly known for his career in the Brooklyn Dodgers as a right-handed pitcher. Born on December 18, 1924, in Omaha, Nebraska, Barney was scouted by the Dodgers organization in 1943 and played with several minor league teams until his major league debut with Brooklyn on September 22, 1943. He played for Brooklyn until 1951 and ended his baseball career with a record of 33-28, 3.91 Earned Run Average (ERA), and 315 strikeouts in 564 innings pitched. More about Rex Barney

Barney was known not only for his pitching skills but also his colorful personality and entertaining style. He was famous for his antics on the mound, which included shouting at himself, doing exaggerated windups, and throwing his cap in the air after throwing a strikeout. In 1950, he was even featured in a Warner Brothers film titled "Kill the Umpire." Although he was never an All-Star player, he made a lasting impression in the baseball world and was inducted into the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

After retiring from baseball, Barney became a sports commentator and announcer, working for the WCSG, WPIX, and WMCA. He also served as a broadcaster for the Baltimore Orioles for over 30 years, where he was known for his catchphrase "Give that fan a contract!" when a spectator made a remarkable catch in the stands. Barney was posthumously awarded the Ford C. Frick Award by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in 1996 for his outstanding work as a broadcaster. Barney died on August 12, 1997, after battling Parkinson's disease. Despite his passing, his legacy as a colorful and beloved figure in baseball remains immortalized in the sport's history.
