Gedman was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the third round of the 1977 MLB draft. After a few years in the minor leagues, he made his Major League debut with the Red Sox in 1980. Gedman quickly established himself as a solid catcher with a great arm, and in 1985 he had his best season, hitting .295 with 24 home runs and 81 RBIs. He also won a Silver Slugger award for his offensive prowess that year. Gedman continued to be a reliable contributor for the Red Sox throughout the 1980s, but his career declined in the early 1990s and he retired as a player in 1992.

After retirement, Gedman stayed involved in baseball as a coach and manager. He spent time as a minor league coach and was the manager of the Worcester Tornadoes of the Can-Am League in 2011 and 2012. In 2013, he returned to the Red Sox organization as a hitting coach for their minor league system, and he was promoted to interim hitting coach for the major league team in 2017. Rich Gedman will remain a legendary figure in Boston Red Sox history, memorable for his impressive playing career and his continued contribution to the organization as a coach.
