In 1974, Burleson was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the first round of the amateur draft. He spent his entire career with the Red Sox, establishing himself as one of the best shortstops of his era. Burleson's speed, agility, and strong arm made him a standout defensive player, while his consistency at the plate made him a valuable asset to the team. Throughout his career, he was a three-time All-Star and won two Gold Glove awards.

Despite battling injuries, Burleson's career spanned 14 seasons and 1,311 games, during which he accumulated 1,173 hits, 750 runs scored, and 538 runs batted in. After his playing career, Burleson went on to coach at the collegiate level for a number of years. He was also inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2002.
