Rick Reed was born on August 16, 1965, in Huntington, West Virginia. He spent most of his childhood in the small town of Nitro and developed a passion for baseball at a young age. After graduating from Nitro High School in 1983, Reed continued to pursue his love for baseball at Marshall University. Instead, Reed played in various independent leagues before being signed by the Minnesota Twins in 1992. He made his major league debut in 1988 but it wasn't until he joined the Twins in 1992 that he started to establish himself as a reliable pitcher. Reed enjoyed a successful 14-year career in the majors, playing for the Minnesota Twins, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, and the Washington Nationals. He was known for his outstanding control and his ability to keep hitters guessing with a variety of pitches. Over the course of his career, Reed amassed 93 wins, 114 losses, a 4.03 ERA, and 1,590 strikeouts. In 2001, he was named to the All-Star team as a member of the Mets, and he helped lead the team to the World Series that same year.

After retiring from baseball in 2003, Reed worked as an umpire for a few years before joining the St. Paul Saints as a pitching coach in 2005. In 2008, he was named the team's manager, a role he held for eight seasons. Under Reed's leadership, the Saints won two league championships and achieved a league record of 74-26 in 2015. Rick Reed continues to work in baseball as a pitching consultant and enjoys spending time with his family in Minnesota. He is remembered as a talented and dedicated pitcher who left a lasting impact on the sport.
