Rhoden made his MLB debut in 1974 and spent eight seasons pitching for the Dodgers before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1981. He spent seven seasons with the Pirates and was an integral part of the team's success in the early 1980s. In 1986, Rhoden was traded to the New York Yankees where he spent the final four seasons of his career.

Over his 16 seasons in the MLB, Rhoden amassed a record of 151-125 with a 3.59 earned run average (ERA) and 1,417 strikeouts. He was a two-time All-Star and finished in the top ten in Cy Young Award voting in 1984 and 1985.
