Sutcliffe was known for his trademark pitcher's cap and a unique pitching style with arm just moving back and his wrist having a whip-like action. He was a strong-willed player and benefitted from work ethic that made him the standout performer in his games. Despite injuries hampering his chances to play more games, he still went on to win over 171 games in his career, had a 4.08 ERA, and struck out over 1,500 batters. Sutcliffe was also successful in the playoffs as he posted an impressive 4-1 record and got a World Series ring with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1981.

After his professional baseball career ended, Sutcliffe transitioned to broadcasting and became an analyst for ESPN. He continues to work as a member of the Baseball Tonight show and remains an influential personality in the baseball community. Becoming an analyst for ESPN allowed him to stay connected with the sport and be a part of the discussion and analysis of the game play. In addition to broadcasting, Sutcliffe is also known for his philanthropic work and founded the Rick Sutcliffe 23 Foundation which raised funds to provide scholarships for students in need of financial assistance. Overall, Sutcliffe's long career in baseball has left a positive mark on the sport as well as in the lives of those who have benefitted from his contributions.
