Rip Sewell was born on May 11, 1907, in Decatur, Alabama. He was an American baseball player who played as a pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1938 to 1949. Sewell was known for his signature pitch, the "eephus" pitch. He started his baseball career in the minor leagues in 1928, playing for the Gadsden Pilots. He was called up to the majors in 1938, and his first game was against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Sewell played 12 seasons in the majors, with an impressive career record of 143 wins and 97 losses. Rip Sewell was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1969, and his number 21 was retired by the Pittsburgh Pirates. He passed away on September 3, 1989, in Prescott, Arizona.
