Roger Wolff Autographs
Roger Wolff was an American baseball player, born on April 17, 1911, in Evansville, Indiana. He began his professional baseball career in 1930 for the Toledo Mud Hens before being sold to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1933. It wasn't until 1940 when he joined the Washington Senators that he found his stride on the diamond. Wolff was known for his incredible knuckleball that he threw with great finesse and accuracy. In 1945, he led the American League with 20 wins, 2.12 ERA, and an astonishing 10 shutouts. This performance earned him a fourth-place finish in the American League MVP voting that year.
Wolff's unique approach to pitching with the knuckleball had a significant impact on the game, as more and more players began to incorporate the pitching style into their game. Wolff spent eight seasons in the major leagues, playing for three different teams: the Philadelphia Athletics, Washington Senators, and Cleveland Indians. He played in 211 games, starting 136 of them, and pitched 1,179 innings, striking out 513 batters, and finishing his career with a 79-54 record and a 3.24 ERA.
Though he retired from professional baseball in 1946, Wolff's contributions to the game were far-reaching. His success with the knuckleball changed the way pitchers approached the game, and his record for ten shutouts in a single season has yet to be surpassed. Wolff passed away on May 2, 1994, in Moose Lake, Minnesota, at the age of 83. His legacy remains today as one of the greatest knuckleball pitchers in baseball history.
