Taylor's professional baseball career began in 1962 when he joined the Cleveland Indians as a relief pitcher. He went on to play for multiple teams, including the Houston Astros, New York Mets, San Diego Padres, and Montreal Expos. Taylor played a crucial role in the Mets' World Series victory in 1969, winning two games in relief during the series. Over his eleven-year career, Taylor recorded 52 wins, 53 losses, and 74 saves, with a 3.93 ERA in 563 games.

After retiring from baseball, Taylor continued to make significant contributions to baseball as a physician. He worked for the Toronto Blue Jays as a physician from 1979 to 1993 and served as the team's medical director, where he aimed at improving the health of the players. Taylor was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981 and passed away on November 16, 2019, at the age of 81. He will always be remembered as a skilled player who made history as a part of the New York Mets' first World Series championship team.
