Roy Smalley was a shortstop who played in the Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1975 to 1987. He was born on June 9, 1952, in Los Angeles, California. Smalley grew up with sports as his father, Roy Smalley Jr. was also a professional baseball player. His grandfather, Roy Smalley Sr., was also a baseball player who played for the Chicago Cubs in the 1920s. Smalley started his career with the Texas Rangers, where he played from 1975 to 1976 before being traded to the Minnesota Twins, where he spent the prime of his career. Smalley was an integral part of the Twins' team of the 1980s, playing in two American League Championship Series (ALCS) and the 1987 World Series. In 1982, he recorded a career-best offensive year, batting .283 with 24 home runs and 95 runs batted in (RBIs). Smalley finished his career with the Yankees, spending his last two seasons there.

Throughout his career, Smalley was known for being a solid defensive player with a knack for making spectacular plays. He had an excellent throwing arm, making his double plays seamless and easy. Smalley was also a consistent hitter, finishing his career with a .257 batting average and 163 home runs. He went on to become a successful baseball coach and broadcaster after retiring, continuing his love for the sport. Smalley remains an integral part of the Twins' community and is a beloved figure amongst fans, who fondly remember his contributions to the team's success.
