Ruben Gomez was a Puerto Rican professional baseball player, born on July 13, 1927, in Arroyo, Puerto Rico. He started his baseball career in the Puerto Rican Winter League, where he played for the Cangrejeros de Santurce. In 1953, he signed with the New York Giants and made his Major League Baseball debut the same year. He played for the Giants until 1958, and then for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cleveland Indians, and Minnesota Twins before retiring in 1967. More about Ruben Gomez

Gomez was primarily a pitcher and had a successful career, winning 76 games and posting an ERA of 4.01 over his 15-year career. One of his most significant achievements was his performance in the 1954 World Series. He pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 1 against the Cleveland Indians, which helped the Giants win the Series. Gomez also appeared in the 1957 All-Star Game, where he pitched two scoreless innings and earned the win.
After retiring from baseball, Gomez returned to his native Puerto Rico and became involved in politics. He served as the mayor of his hometown, Arroyo, and later as a member of the Puerto Rican Senate. However, he remained connected to the baseball world, working as a scout for the Montreal Expos in the 1970s and as a coach for the Puerto Rican national team. Ruben Gomez passed away on July 26, 2004, in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at the age of 77.
