Ortiz was a standout athlete in high school and played college ball at the University of Oklahoma. He was drafted by the Giants in the fourth round of the 1995 MLB Draft. Ortiz debuted in the majors in 1998, and he quickly established himself as a reliable starting pitcher. In 2002, he helped lead the Giants to the World Series, though they ultimately lost to the Anaheim Angels.

Ortiz continued to pitch effectively for several more years. He recorded a career-high 21 wins for the Braves in 2003 and earned an All-Star selection the following year. He retired after the 2010 season, finishing his career with a 3.94 ERA and 1,489 strikeouts over 14 seasons. Ortiz's consistency and durability made him a valuable asset to any team he played for, and he is remembered as one of the most effective pitchers of his era.
