Staub began his baseball career in the minor leagues at the young age of 17. He made his Major League debut with the Houston Colt .45s (now the Houston Astros) in 1963. He quickly established himself as a valuable asset to the team, with his strong arm and solid batting skills. In 1968, he was traded to the Montreal Expos, where he achieved some of the greatest success of his career. He became one of the most beloved players in Expos history, earning the nickname "Le Grand Orange" for his fiery red hair and energetic style of play. He played for a variety of teams over the course of his career, including the New York Mets, Detroit Tigers, and Texas Rangers, before retiring in 1985.

Staub's career statistics are impressive, with a lifetime batting average of .279, 2,716 hits, and 292 home runs. He was named to six All-Star teams and was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 2012. Staub was also known for his philanthropic work, founding the Rusty Staub Foundation, which helped to provide food and medical care to families in need.
