Born on July 27, 1986, in Portland, Maine, Flaherty grew up with a passion for baseball, playing for several teams throughout his youth. He attended Vanderbilt University and played for the Vanderbilt Commodores. In the 2008 Major League Baseball draft, Flaherty was selected by the Chicago Cubs as the 41st overall pick.
