Freel started his baseball career with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2001, where he played for two years. He then played for the Cincinnati Reds, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, and Chicago Cubs over the course of his career. Freel was known for his versatility and ability to play multiple positions on the field, including second base, third base, and outfield. He was also known for his aggressive play style and willingness to do anything to help his team win.

Despite his successful career, Freel struggled with mental health issues and alcoholism. He tragically took his own life on December 22, 2012, at the age of 36. Following his death, it was discovered that he had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a brain disease often caused by repeated head injuries, likely from his time playing baseball.
