Salvatore "Sal" Butera was born on September 25, 1952, in Richmond Hill, Queens, New York. He played baseball at Bishop Ford Central Catholic High School in Brooklyn before being drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fifth round of the 1972 MLB Draft. Butera made his major league debut with the Twins in 1980 and played for the team until 1983. He then played for the Montreal Expos for a season before returning to the Twins for his final two seasons in 1985 and 1986. As a catcher, he was known for his excellent defense behind the plate.
During his career, Sal Butera was known as a defensive specialist and backup catcher, but he was a valuable player for the teams he played for. He was a crucial part of the Minnesota Twins' 1987 World Championship team that won 85 regular-season games and then went on to rank through the playoffs. Butera was behind the plate for the final two games of the World Series, in which the Twins defeated the St. Louis Cardinals. During his eight-year career, he played in 359 games, hitting .227 with nine home runs and 51 runs batted in.
After retiring from baseball, Butera became a minor league manager and coach, working for several teams, including the Buffalo Bisons, the New Britain Rock Cats, and the Rochester Red Wings. Butera even spent some time coaching for the Italian national team. He later worked in scouting and development for the Toronto Blue Jays, where he helped evaluate and develop young talent, including current MLB All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Today, Sal Butera is enjoying retirement surrounded by his family, who are all involved in baseball at various levels.
