Salomon Torres was born on March 11, 1972 in San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic. He was signed by the San Francisco Giants as an amateur free agent in 1989, and made his major league debut with the club in 1993. Torres played as a relief pitcher for 12 seasons with various teams, including the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, and San Francisco Giants. Torres had a successful career as a relief pitcher in Major League Baseball, appearing in 637 games and pitching for a total of 656 innings. He posted a career record of 44-58 with an ERA of 4.31 and 57 saves. Torres was known for his strong fastball and slider, and was often called upon in critical situations by his managers. In 2006, he had his best season, recording 12 saves and 23 holds with a 2.28 ERA for the Pirates.

Off the field, Torres was well-respected by his teammates and coaches for his positive attitude and work ethic. He was recognized with the Pirates' Heart and Hustle Award in 2005 and 2006. Torres also gave back to his community through various charitable organizations, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation and the Marlins Foundation.
