Sam Bowens Autograph

Sam Bowens was an American baseball player born on March 23, 1938, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He played as an outfielder for the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). Bowens attended the Williston Industrial High School in Wilmington, where he played baseball and basketball. He was later signed by the Baltimore Orioles as an amateur free agent in 1957. Bowens made his MLB debut with the Baltimore Orioles in 1963. He was part of the Orioles' outfield alongside Paul Blair and Frank Robinson, which was known as one of the best in MLB history. Bowens played for the Orioles from 1963 to 1965, where he hit a career-best .263 in 1964. He was then traded to the Houston Astros in 1966, where he played until 1968. Bowens still holds some records with the Houston Astros, including the most triples in a season (12) in 1967.

Bowens was known for his impressive speed, defense, and powerful arm. He was a leading player in the golden era of the Baltimore Orioles and was also named the American League Rookie of the Year in 1964 by The Sporting News. Despite an injury in 1967, Bowens continued to play hard and helped the Houston Astros reach their first .500 season in franchise history. He played his final MLB game on September 21, 1969, as a member of the Washington Senators.
