Sam Jethroe Autographs

Sam Jethroe (January 23, 1917 – June 18, 2001) was a star of the Negro Leagues in the 1940s and 1950s before he broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball with the Boston Braves in 1950. Jethroe’s speed and hitting ability made him one of the most exciting players of his era. His impact was so great that he was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 1950.
Jethroe was born in Lowndes County, Mississippi, the youngest of 17 children. His family moved around frequently and eventually settled in East St. Louis, Illinois. He began his professional baseball career playing for the Memphis Red Sox of the Negro American League in 1940. Jethroe’s speed made him an immediate standout – he stole 89 bases in 1942 and led the league in triples in 1943.
After serving in World War II, Jethroe returned to the Memphis Red Sox and continued to impress on the field. In 1947, he was signed by the Boston Braves and sent to their minor league affiliate in Toronto. Two years later, Jethroe was called up to the Braves and made his MLB debut on April 18, 1950. He immediately made an impact, finishing the season with a .273 batting average, 18 home runs, and a league-leading 35 stolen bases. Despite his success, Jethroe’s major league career would be short-lived due to a knee injury that hampered his speed. He retired from baseball in 1959 and was later inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 1972.
