Sam Rice Autographs
Sam Rice, also known as Edgar Charles Rice, was a professional baseball player who played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for 20 years from 1915 to 1934. He was born on February 20, 1890, in Morocco, Indiana, and began his baseball career in the minor league. His batting and fielding skills helped him earn a place in the major league, and he made his debut with the Washington Senators in 1915, playing as an outfielder. Rice played for the Senators for 13 seasons before moving to the Cleveland Indians in 1929 and eventually retiring from the game in 1934.
Rice was a consistent hitter with a batting average of .322. He was also a skilled fielder, and his outfield abilities earned him the nickname "the man with the rubber arm." Rice was a part of the World Series championship team in 1924, where he made a famous catch that held off the New York Giants in Game 3. He was known for his longevity in the game and played in 2,289 games, scoring 1,423 runs, and achieving 2,987 hits, including 34 home runs. Rice was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1963, seven years after his death.
Rice's career was not only notable for his performance but also for his conduct. He was a respected player who never got into any trouble and played honestly, earning him the nickname "Gentleman Sam." Rice's greatness on and off the field earned him a spot in the Baseball Hall of Fame. His legacy lives on today as one of the greatest outfielders to have ever played the game.
