Scot Thompson was born on June 12, 1957, in Baraboo, Wisconsin. He was always interested in playing baseball and pursued his passion early on in life. In high school, he played for the Waunakee Warriors, and after graduation, he went on to play at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse, where he was a two-time All-Conference outfielder. After college, Thompson signed with the Milwaukee Brewers as an undrafted free agent in 1979. He spent five years in the Brewers organization, playing in the minor leagues and achieving a career high .326 batting average in Double-A ball in 1981. In 1984, he was traded to the Chicago Cubs, where he spent two seasons as a backup outfielder. In his major league career, Thompson played in 174 games and hit .208 with four home runs and 27 RBI.

Thompson retired from playing baseball in 1986 and went on to become a coach and scout for various major league teams, including the Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, and Minnesota Twins. He is known for his expertise in hitting and has coached many successful players over the years.
