Hatteberg joined the Athletics in 2002 as a backup catcher, but a series of injuries to Oakland's starting first baseman resulted in Hatteberg taking over the position. This move turned out to be a stroke of genius by manager Billy Beane. Hatteberg thrived as the team's first baseman, and his walk-off home run against the Royals in September of that year helped the A's set an American League record for consecutive wins. The A's went on to make the playoffs that year, but eventually lost to the Minnesota Twins in the American League Division Series. Hatteberg continued to play for the A's until 2006, when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds.

Hatteberg retired from baseball after the 2008 season with a career batting average of .273, with 106 home runs and 481 RBI. He is best known for his role in the Moneyball story, chronicled in Michael Lewis' book and later in the film adaptation. In the book, Hatteberg is depicted as a vital part of the A's success because of his ability to get on base and draw walks, something for which Beane saw value beyond just traditional stats such as batting average and RBIs. Hatteberg's career is a testament to the idea of finding undervalued players and using their unique skills to build a winning team. Read even more about Scott Hatteberg at Wikipedia
