Scott Sauerbeck was born on November 23, 1971, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Sauerbeck attended Western Hills High School in Cincinnati, where he played both baseball and basketball. After graduating, he attended the University of Florida, where he played for the Florida Gators baseball team. In 1992, he was drafted by the Houston Astros in the seventh round of the Major League Baseball draft, but he chose to return to school for his senior year. Sauerbeck went on to play for several other Major League teams, including the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, and Cincinnati Reds. He retired from baseball in 2006 with a 3.39 career ERA in 408 appearances. Sauerbeck was known for his unconventional pitching mechanics, in which he would turn his back to the batter before delivering the ball.
