Shawn Abner Autographs
Shawn Abner is a former American Major League Baseball outfielder who was born on June 17, 1966, in Hamilton, Ohio. Abner began to attract baseball scouts' attention during the 1980s as a student-athlete at Mechanicsburg High School in Mechanicsburg, Ohio. In 1984, Shawn Abner was named as the top high school player in the nation by both Baseball America and USA Today.
The New York Mets selected Abner as the first overall draft pick in the 1984 Major League Baseball draft. Abner became the first high school player to be selected for the top pick. After two seasons in the Mets' minor league system, Abner was traded to the San Diego Padres before the 1987 season. On September 8, 1987, he made his MLB debut with the Padres.
Despite the high expectations that came with being the first overall pick, Abner struggled to find success in the major leagues. In his four seasons in the MLB, Shawn Abner played for San Diego Padres, California Angels, and the Chicago White Sox. He hit .227 with 11 home runs and 71 RBI in 392 at-bats. Abner’s career ended in 1993 due to an injury that had shortened his playing time with the White Sox. Despite his challenging career, Abner remains a well-known name in the sport, especially for being the first overall draft pick to come out of high school.
