Born Forrest Harrill Burgess on February 6, 1927, in Caroleen, North Carolina, Smoky Burgess was a talented baseball player who had a storied career in the Major League Baseball. He made his debut for the Chicago Cubs in 1949 and played with several teams including the Pittsburg Pirates, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Chicago White Sox until his retirement in 1967. Burgess was a phenomenal catcher renowned for his agility and skill in handling the ball.
