Sonny Jackson Autographs
Sonny Jackson is an American former professional baseball shortstop who was born on July 9, 1944, in Austin, Texas. He made his Major League debut with the Houston Colt .45s in 1963 at the age of 19. Jackson spent nine seasons in the major leagues, playing for the Houston Colt .45s, Houston Astros, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Cubs. Throughout his career, he was known for his excellent defensive skills and speed. Jackson primarily played as a backup infielder and a pinch runner, but he occasionally started at shortstop and third base.
Jackson is remembered for his role in the 1969 season with the Atlanta Braves when he set a National League record for the most consecutive stolen bases without being caught. In that season, he stole 29 bases in a row. Jackson played his last Major League game for the Chicago Cubs on September 28, 1974, at the age of 30. He finished his career with an impressive .982 fielding percentage and 56 stolen bases. After retiring from baseball, Jackson worked as a real estate developer in Houston, Texas, and in 2004 he was inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame.
Sonny Jackson's baseball career was not as glamorous as some of the game's other stars, but he proved to be a reliable and valuable player for multiple teams throughout his nine seasons in the major leagues. His excellent defensive skills and blazing speed made him an important asset to his teams, even though he was mostly used as a pinch runner and backup infielder. His record-setting 1969 season with the Atlanta Braves showed that he had the potential to be a star player, but he never quite got there. Nevertheless, he left a lasting impact on the game of baseball and is remembered as one of the league's best defensive players.
