Adams began his professional career playing for the Chicago Cubs in 1917. He played in only nine games during that season before being traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Adams played for the Pirates for three seasons before being traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1920. It was with the Cardinals that Adams found his groove and cemented his legacy as a standout player. He played with the Cardinals for six seasons and was a key member of the team that won the World Series in 1926.

Adams continued playing for several more years, including a brief stint with the Cincinnati Reds and the New York Giants. He retired from professional baseball in 1932 with a batting average of .286 and 1,289 hits. Adams' legacy in baseball is remembered as a hard-working player who always gave his best effort on the field. He was known for his strong defensive skills and his ability to steal bases.
