Shea quickly showcased his talent as a pitcher in his rookie season, winning 14 games with a 3.07 ERA and being named to the All-Star team. Shea played a prominent role in the Yankees' World Series victory that year, starting and winning two games in the series with a 0.87 ERA. The following season was plagued by injuries, but Shea bounced back in 1949 with another All-Star appearance and helping the Yankees win another World Series. Shea's career was hampered by injuries and in 1952 he was traded to the Washington Senators. Despite his injuries, Shea managed to have decent seasons with the Senators and played his last game in 1955 with the Chicago White Sox.

Overall, Shea's MLB career spanned nine seasons, during which he won 58 games, lost 34, and had an ERA of 3.51. He recorded 506 strikeouts, and his most successful seasons were with the Yankees. Shea retired from baseball in 1955 and eventually settled in Glastonbury, Connecticut, where he passed away on July 19, 2002, at the age of 81.
