Spurgeon Ferdinand "Spud" Chandler was born on September 12, 1907, in Commerce, Georgia. He was a right-handed pitcher for the New York Yankees in Major League Baseball from 1937 to 1947. Although he started his career as a relief pitcher, Chandler made a name for himself as an outstanding starter for the Yankees. Chandler's best season was in 1943, when he won 20 games and had a league-leading 1.64 earned run average (ERA). He was selected as the American League Most Valuable Player (MVP) that year, becoming the first pitcher since Lefty Grove in 1931 to win the award. Chandler's pitching helped lead the Yankees to their tenth World Series championship that same year. He finished his career with a record of 109-43, a 2.84 ERA, and 68 complete games.

After retiring from baseball, Chandler returned to Georgia and became a successful businessman in the trucking and farming industries. He was inducted into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame in 1968 and was also honored by the New York Yankees with a plaque in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium in 1985.
