Spud Davis Autograph

Arthur Earl "Spud" Davis, born on December 20, 1904, was an American professional baseball player who primarily played as a catcher. Davis had a successful career in baseball playing for the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates, spanning from 1928 to 1945. Davis started his baseball career playing for the Oklahoma City Indians, and he later signed with the Cardinals in 1928. In 1934, Davis set a National League record of 547 fielding chances as a catcher, making only five errors during the season. He was an integral part of the Cardinals’ World Series championship in 1934, contributing heavily during the postseason. Later in his career, Davis played for the Phillies and Pirates, where he continued to be a dependable catcher and consistent hitter.

After retiring from playing baseball, Davis was a coach for various teams, including the Cincinnati Reds and the Washington Senators. He was known for his knowledge of the game and his ability to mentor young players. In 1970, Davis was inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.
