Avery was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the first round of the 1988 Major League Baseball draft and made his major league debut in 1990 at the age of 20. He quickly established himself as a key member of the Braves' starting rotation, helping the team reach the World Series in 1991 and 1992. In the 1991 World Series, Avery won both of his starts, including a 1-0 victory in Game 4, and was named the National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player.

Avery continued to pitch for the Braves until 1996, when he was traded to the Boston Red Sox. He had stints with several other teams over the next few years before retiring in 2003. Over the course of his career, Avery had a record of 96-83 with a 4.19 earned run average and 1,074 strikeouts. He was also known for his ability to hit, with a career batting average of .174 and four home runs. Despite some injury setbacks in his career, Steve Avery remains one of the most successful pitchers in the history of the Atlanta Braves and a respected figure in the world of baseball.
