Despite early success, Howe's career was marred by issues with drug addiction. He was suspended multiple times throughout his career for violating the MLB's drug policy, including being banned for life in 1992 after repeatedly testing positive for cocaine. Despite the setbacks, Howe was able to make multiple comebacks and even won the Comeback Player of the Year award in 1986 after returning from his first suspension.

Throughout his career, Howe played for a number of teams, including the Dodgers, Minnesota Twins, Texas Rangers, and New York Yankees. He finished his career in 1996 with a career ERA of 3.03 and 91 saves. Although his career was plagued by off-field issues, Howe remained a respected player in the baseball community and will be remembered as a talented and dominant relief pitcher.
