Steve Reed began his baseball career as a pitcher for North Carolina State University, where he was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference team in 1988. After being selected by the San Francisco Giants in the 1988 draft, Reed worked his way through the minor leagues before making his major league debut in 1992. Over the course of his 13-year professional career, Reed posted a 3.94 ERA with 18 saves and 399 strikeouts over 807 innings pitched.
Reed played for five different teams during his major league career, including stints with the San Francisco Giants, Colorado Rockies, Cleveland Indians, San Diego Padres, and New York Mets. One of his most notable seasons came in 1999 when he pitched in a career-high 82 games for the Rockies, recording 5 wins and 3 saves while striking out 58 batters in 76 innings. He was also a member of the Colorado Rockies team that made it to the playoffs for the first time in franchise history in 1995.
After retiring from baseball in 2005, Reed has been involved in coaching and player development at the high school and college levels. He has also been involved in various charitable organizations, including his own Steve Reed Foundation, which supports education and sports programs for underprivileged children. Reed's contributions to the game of baseball and his ongoing commitment to helping others have made him a respected figure both within and outside the sport.
