He had a successful career in the National Hockey League (NHL) and was known for his exceptional qualities such as quick reflexes, excellent positioning, and focus. Shields played for several teams including the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks, Boston Bruins, and Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. He established the 'Steve Shields Shoot for a Cure' program in 2003, which not only raises funds for CF research but also brings hope to families and individuals living with the disease. Shields was the recipient of the AHL's "Yanick Dupre Memorial" Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to charitable activities during his playing career.
