One of the highlights of Stone's career was during the 1972 season with the Cubs when he went 22-9, with a 2.63 ERA with 250 strikeouts. It was the best season of his career, and he was named to the All-Star team. This season still ranks in the top five in Cubs' history for most complete games, shutouts, and innings pitched. In 1983, his final professional season, he went 7-8 with a 4.12 ERA, but he still helped the Orioles clinch the American East division-clinching game in the final week of the season.

After retiring from baseball as a player, he worked for several years as a baseball color commentator for the Chicago Cubs and the White Sox. He has also written two books on baseball and was a play-by-play commentator for the NCAA college baseball games on ESPN. Steve Stone's career has been decorated with numerous accolades, including induction into the Chicagoland Sports Hall of Fame in 1992 and the Illinois Sports Hall of Fame in 2010. He remains one of the greatest pitchers to have played for the Cubs and Orioles with a career record of 107-93, 3.96 ERA, and a total of 1053 strikeouts.
