Sweet Lou Johnson Autographs
Sweet Lou Johnson was a professional baseball player born on September 22, 1934, in Lexington, Kentucky. He played as an outfielder and first baseman for a few teams over nine seasons during his Major League Baseball (MLB) career from 1960 to 1969. Sweet Lou began his professional baseball career in the minor leagues in 1955, playing for the San Francisco Giants, and spent several seasons in the minor leagues before moving up to the major leagues in 1960.
Sweet Lou's most notable time as a baseball player was with the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he played from 1965 to 1967. During his tenure with the Dodgers, he played a significant role in the team's success, including hitting a crucial home run in Game 7 of the 1965 World Series. Johnson's home run broke a 0-0 tie, which led the Dodgers to win the World Series against the Minnesota Twins with a score of 2-0. After leaving the Dodgers, Sweet Lou played for several more teams, including the California Angels and Cincinnati Reds, before retiring from professional baseball in 1969.
Off the field, Sweet Lou had a passion for working with youths and conducting baseball clinics. He founded an organization called the Sweet Lou Johnson Baseball Academy, which aimed to promote baseball and encourage young children to participate in the sport. He also served as a scout for the San Diego Padres, where he worked to identify and recruit talented players. Sweet Lou passed away on October 1, 2020, at the age of 86. His legacy as a successful African American baseball player and charitable individual will long be remembered.
