Ted Abernathy Autographs
Ted Abernathy was a professional baseball player who played for the Chicago Cubs, Atlanta Braves, Cincinnati Reds, Kansas City Royals, St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox. Born on March 6, 1933, in Stanley, North Carolina, Abernathy's career spanned from 1955 to 1972. Abernathy was known for his "submarine" pitching style, which meant he threw sidewinder-style pitches by keeping his arm very low to the ground. He had a career combined record of 63-69, with an ERA of 3.46.
Abernathy's most successful years were with the Cincinnati Reds from 1965 to 1969. During those years, Abernathy became one of the best relief pitchers in the game. In 1965, Abernathy set a record by appearing in 84 games as a reliever, and he finished second in the Cy Young Award voting. In 1967, Abernathy was a part of the Reds team that made it to the World Series, but lost to the Boston Red Sox. Abernathy would continue to play for a few more years before retiring after the 1972 season.
After retiring from baseball, Abernathy became a high school pitching coach and a scout for the Cincinnati Reds. He also became involved in politics and was elected to the City Council of Belmont, North Carolina. Abernathy passed away on December 16, 2004, at the age of 71. Overall, Abernathy's unorthodox pitching style and success as a relief pitcher made him a notable player in baseball history.
