Gray's professional career began when he joined the Detroit Tigers organization in 1945. After spending his early years in the minor leagues, he made his Major League Baseball debut with the Tigers in 1946. Gray established himself as a solid pitcher, posting a 13-6 record with a 2.83 ERA in his rookie season. He was named to the American League All-Star team in 1950 and 1952. Gray's best season came in 1954 when he won 18 games and led the league in strikeouts with 199.

Despite his success, injuries hampered Gray's career. In 1955, he suffered a fractured skull after being hit by a line drive. He never fully recovered from the injury, and his performance declined significantly. After brief stints with the Chicago White Sox and Baltimore Orioles, Gray retired from baseball in 1958. He finished his career with a record of 59 wins and 55 losses, a 3.63 ERA, and 658 strikeouts. Ted Gray will always be remembered as one of the most talented pitchers of his time.
