Tim Birtsas Autographs
Tim Birtsas was born on August 5, 1960, in Hamilton, Ohio. He attended Hamilton High School and played baseball there before moving on to pitch for Miami University in Ohio. Birtsas was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 1982 MLB Draft, but was traded to the Cincinnati Reds the following year. He made his Major League Baseball debut in 1985 with the Reds and went on to pitch for several teams throughout his career.
Birtsas is best remembered for his role in the Cincinnati Reds' surprising World Series victory in 1990. He had a 2.93 ERA in 27 relief appearances during the regular season, and then played a key role in the postseason, allowing only one run in nine innings pitched. Birtsas came in to pitch the ninth inning of Game 3 of the World Series against the Oakland Athletics, with the Reds up 8-3, and retired all three batters he faced to seal the win. He would go on to pitch in one more game in the series, which the Reds won in a four-game sweep.
Birtsas played for seven different teams during his career, which spanned from 1985-1993. He finished his career with a 4.14 ERA and a 10-14 record. After retiring as a player, Birtsas went on to work as a pitching coach, helping young players to develop their skills on the mound. Today, he is remembered as a key player in one of the most memorable moments in Cincinnati Reds history.
