Burke spent the majority of his career with the Montreal Expos, where he was a dominant relief pitcher and a key member of the team's bullpen. He led the National League in games pitched in both the 1987 and 1988 seasons, and was selected to the All-Star Game in 1987. Burke was known for his devastating slider, which he used to strike out opposing batters with great frequency.

After leaving the Expos, Burke had brief stints with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, and Texas Rangers before retiring from baseball in 1992. He finished his career with a record of 49-33, 3.51 ERA, and 56 saves in 613 games pitched. Burke is remembered as one of the most dominant relievers of his era, and his contributions to the Expos' bullpen played a significant role in the team's success during the late 1980s.
