He was born on March 4, 1948, in Wisconsin and attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he played for the school's baseball team. In 1970, Grieve made his debut in the Major Leagues with the Washington Senators, and his first year in the big leagues was impressive. He hit 10 home runs and had 42 runs batted in, and he was named as the American League's Rookie of the Year. Grieve continued to play with the Senators until 1975, when he was traded to the New York Mets.
