Tommy Bridges was born on December 28, 1906, in Gordonsville, Tennessee. He was an American Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Detroit Tigers from 1930 to 1946, and he was a part of the Detroit Tigers World Series-winning team in 1935. Bridges had a unique pitching style and was known for his curveball. He was known as one of the most dominant pitchers of the 1930s and was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947. He led the American League in strikeouts in 1934 with 174 and in 1936 with 170. He also threw two no-hitters during his career, one against the Washington Senators in 1932 and another against the St. Louis Browns in 1935. In the 1935 World Series, Bridges pitched two complete games, allowing only one run and six hits in each game, leading the Tigers to their first-ever World Series championship.
Bridges was admired and respected by his fellow players for his skill and sportsmanship. He served in the United States Army during World War II and played on baseball teams that were part of the military. Bridges retired from baseball in 1946, and he remained involved with the sport as a coach and a scout. He passed away on April 19, 1968, in Nashville, Tennessee.
