Tommy Harper was born on October 14, 1940, in Oak Grove, Louisiana. He was the youngest of eight children in his family. Harper showed a keen interest in baseball from a young age, and his innate talent soon became apparent. He was an exceptional athlete in high school, and played both football and baseball. Tommy Harper began his professional baseball career with the Cincinnati Reds in 1962. He quickly established himself as a reliable player, and helped the Reds win the National League pennant in 1961.
