Helms played for the Reds for a total of nine seasons, from 1965 to 1972, and then again from 1979 to 1980. During his time with the Reds, he won the Gold Glove Award at second base in 1966 and 1970. He was also named to the National League All-Star team in 1967 and 1968.

In 1975, Helms was traded to the Houston Astros, where he played for three seasons. He then played for the Pirates for one season before retiring in 1977. Throughout his career, Helms had a batting average of .269 and held a .982 fielding percentage at second base.
