During his long and successful career, Clark primarily played first base but also had stints as a designated hitter and outfielder. He was known for his incredible size, standing at 6 feet 7 inches tall and weighing over 250 pounds. He was also known for his impressive power at the plate, hitting over 20 home runs in a season six times throughout his career. Some of his most notable achievements include being selected to the All-Star team in 2001 and winning the American League Comeback Player of the Year award in 2005.

After retiring from professional baseball in 2009, Clark remained involved in the sport. He worked as the director of the Major League Baseball Players Association and was appointed the executive director of the MLB Players Association in 2013. In this role, he was responsible for ensuring that the rights and interests of MLB players were protected. He made significant contributions towards improving the working conditions and benefits of players within the league.
