Tony Scott was a professional baseball player born on December 12, 1951, in Gastonia, North Carolina. He played as an outfielder for major league baseball teams such as the Houston Astros, Kansas City Royals, and the St. Louis Cardinals. He attended the University of the District of Columbia and played for the school's baseball team. In his early career, he was known for his speed and defensive skills, which made him a valuable centerfielder.
Scott's professional career started in 1973, when he debuted for the Houston Astros. His speed on the base paths and his ability to cover a vast outfield caught the eye of the Astros' coaching staff. In 1975, he stole 78 bases, setting a franchise record that would hold for almost 20 years. He later played for the Kansas City Royals in 1979 and helped them win the American League pennant that year. In the final game of the American League Championship Series, Scott scored the winning run, propelling the Royals to the World Series. Scott played his final season in 1984, with the St. Louis Cardinals, before retiring from baseball at the age of 32.
After his baseball career, Tony Scott managed several minor league teams and coached college baseball. He was known for mentoring young players, sharing his knowledge and experience with them to help them succeed. Tony Scott passed away on November 15, 2020, at the age of 69, leaving behind a legacy as one of the greatest players to wear a Houston Astros jersey. His name is still etched in the history books of baseball both for his statistical achievements and for his role in mentoring many young baseball players who went on to achieve great things.
