Tarasco began his professional career in 1988 when he was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the third round of the MLB draft. He worked his way up the minor leagues and made his major league debut in 1991. During his rookie year, Tarasco hit .251 with 8 home runs and 48 RBIs. He spent his early years in the major leagues with the Braves and had his best season with them in 1994 when he hit .293 with 11 home runs and 52 RBIs. Tarasco ended his career with the Baltimore Orioles in 2002, finishing with a .266 average, 56 home runs, and 272 RBIs.

Despite his solid numbers, Tarasco may be best known for a controversial play during the 1996 American League Championship Series. While playing for the New York Yankees, Tarasco was standing in right field when a young fan named Jeffrey Maier reached over the wall and caught a fly ball that would have been caught by Tarasco. The umpires ruled it a home run, helping the Yankees win the game and eventually the series.
