Tyler Chatwood was born on December 16, 1989, in Redlands, California, and was raised in Yucaipa. He attended Redlands East Valley High School where he played baseball and was drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. Chatwood's best season came in 2013 when he posted an 8-5 record with a 3.15 ERA for the Rockies. Injuries limited his playing time in the following years, and he was eventually released by the Rockies in 2017. He then signed with the Chicago Cubs, where he found success as a relief pitcher.
