Walker began his baseball career in 1934 playing in a mining town in West Virginia. He went on to play for several minor league teams before joining the St. Louis Cardinals in 1940. During his nine seasons with the Cardinals, he became known as one of the best catchers in the league. In 1942, he led the National League with a .500 batting average in the World Series, helping the Cardinals win the championship.

After being traded to the New York Giants in 1949, Walker continued to have a successful career until his retirement in 1957. He was a four-time All-Star and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1971.
