Walt Alston Autographs
Walter Emmons Alston was born on December 1, 1911, in Venice, Ohio. He was a professional baseball manager who is best known for leading the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers to seven National League pennants and four World Series titles from 1954 to 1976. After starring in college sports for Miami University in Ohio, Alston began his professional baseball career as a minor league first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. However, he played in only one minor league season before being released and taking a job as a high school teacher and coach in Ohio.
In 1940, Alston became a minor league manager and coached in the minor leagues for 16 seasons before being hired to manage the Brooklyn Dodgers on November 24, 1953. Alston's tenure in Brooklyn produced instant success with the team winning eight National League pennants and four World Series from 1954 to 1964. His leadership and calm demeanor during his tenure earned him the nickname "The Quiet Man." Alston was also the first manager to have African American players on his team, including Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, and Don Newcombe.
After moving with the Dodgers to Los Angeles in 1958, Alston continued to lead the team to success, winning another four National League pennants and two World Series titles in 1963 and 1965. He retired from the Dodgers in 1976 after managing the team for 23 seasons, finishing with a career record of 2,040 wins and 1,613 losses. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1983, and his career is celebrated as one of the most successful and consistent managerial tenures in baseball history.
