Walter Emmons Alston was born on December 1, 1911, in Venice, Ohio. He was a professional baseball manager who is best known for leading the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers to seven National League pennants and four World Series titles from 1954 to 1976. After starring in college sports for Miami University in Ohio, Alston began his professional baseball career as a minor league first baseman for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. In 1940, Alston became a minor league manager and coached in the minor leagues for 16 seasons before being hired to manage the Brooklyn Dodgers on November 24, 1953. Alston's tenure in Brooklyn produced instant success with the team winning eight National League pennants and four World Series from 1954 to 1964. His leadership and calm demeanor during his tenure earned him the nickname "The Quiet Man."
